On October 1, 1960, Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule, marking the birth of Africa’s most populous nation as a sovereign state. This historic day was not only the beginning of self-governance but also a symbol of hope, resilience, and unity for millions of Nigerians.

The struggle for independence was championed by nationalists such as Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and Chief Anthony Enahoro, who fought tirelessly through political activism, negotiations, and education. Their vision was a free Nigeria where diverse ethnic groups—Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and many others—could live together in peace and progress.

At midnight on that fateful day, the Union Jack was lowered, and the green-white-green flag was hoisted, signifying freedom. Green represents Nigeria’s rich agricultural heritage, while white symbolizes peace and unity.

Today, Independence Day is celebrated nationwide and it serves as a reminder of how far the nation has come and a call for unity, peace, and development.

As Nigeria continues its journey, the spirit of independence lives on, inspiring generations to build the great nation envisioned in 1960—a Nigeria where freedom, justice, and prosperity flourish for all.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY, NIGERIA.
